Charles Sumner was a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts (1851-74)

Born: 6 January 1811 Boston, Massachusetts

Died: 11 March 1874

Best Known As: The anti-slavery Republican activist who was caned in the U.S. Senate in 1856.

An Irish immigrant, Colonel Thomas Cass (1822-1862) founded the “Fighting Ninth” Regiment during the Civil War. The Ninth Regiment consisted entirely of volunteers, most of them Irish-American. Cass was killed leading his troops in battle at Malvern Hill in Virginia.
